Unlike most trailers, horse trailers have a few requirements to make sure your animals are comfortable and safe. The first consideration is inside space. Your horses need to be able to adopt a wide stance to keep their balance while the trailer is in motion.

You also need great ventilation. You’ll want a vent in the front, one in the back, and a few on the side at the very least—but more is better! 

Finally, make sure you find an interior that gets plenty of light. Dark spaces can stress out prey animals like horses, and their stress can quickly turn to panic. A panicked horse in a confined space isn’t good for anyone. Look for models with windows, artificial lighting, and a light-colored interior.

Material

Another major consideration is the material the trailer is made from. Steel horse trailers can handle more weight more easily, but they’re heavier and are prone to rust. Aluminum models are lighter and rust-resistant, but can bend and break more easily if they’re handling too much weight. You’ll also want to coat whatever you get in anti-corrosive material just to be safe.
